THE DREAM is a graceful swan dive from some cliffs into an azure sea. The health and safety reality is a swimming pool with dedicated diving area and lifeguards on demand. But being able to dive certainly adds a touch of class to the average pool visit. There are the dives done by competitive swimmers at the start of a race, where the aim is to travel further, rather than deeper. But if you’re learning to dive you’re looking at the one- or three-metre springboards, or the five-, 7.5- or 10-metre-high platforms that to climb, let alone jump, was a test of childhood fearlessness.
