Sounds of summer

Whether it’s children playing, the Atlantic waves crashing, wind-breaks blowing or the music of a seaside arcade, we all have sounds that remind us of our coast. If you’re heading to the sea this summer, try to capture these evocative sounds on your phone or tablet or a voice recorder and upload them onto a new sound map created by the National Trust and the British Library. As well as your sound recording (maximum five minutes), you have the option to upload images and an explanation of what the sounds mean to you. The map will be on the British Library website until the ‘sound of our shores’ project finishes on 21 September, when the sounds will be added to the British Library Sound Archive.
