Angus Cundey, the legendary chairman of Henry Poole & Co., is old-school Savile Row. Wine with lunch is gratifyingly non-negotiable as we meet at the table reserved daily for him in the local Italian restaurant behind Poole’s. He is regaling me with one of his characteristically sage ‘Canterbury Tales’ about Savile Row. “A few weeks ago, one of our more prominent American bankers appeared at Poole’s and declared, ‘I don’t want to see you guys going under, so though I don’t need a new suit, I’m going to order one.’ Somewhat ironically, it was reported a week later that his was one of the banks bailed out by the US government.” The moral? Don’t underestimate your tailor: particularly when Henry Poole (with no little help from Baron de Rothschild) was famed…
