expectations were spectacularly low for working-class boys like Douglas Hayward born in London in the 1930s. When his mother died, Hayward discovered every pound note he had given her hidden in ice-cream boxes under her bed. A letter that accompanied the banknotes read: “The money is to get Doug out of prison when they finally get him.” Mrs. Hayward simply could not believe that a humble tailor could earn the money, fame and circle of friends Doug had amassed through honest means. And yet, 500 of London’s brightest and best gathered at Mayfair’s Farm Street Church in May 2008 to celebrate the life of a man who was as well connected as he was loved.
