Whisky dilettantes with pretentions to purism will often scoff at blends, insisting that single malts are the only Scotches worthy of imbibing. “Baws,” as my Hebridean kinfolk would put it (or “Bollocks”, as the scurvy Sassenach might say). Though many a malt makes for a majestic dram, there’s also no shortage of execrable malts on the market — and, conversely, while certain blends are barely fit to polish your shoes with, others are ambrosial elixirs that will put many a highfalutin malt to shame.
