Learn how to use Levels, Curves and Blend Modes to take control of your picture’s exposure and contrast

GETTING YOUR EXPOSURE right in-camera is always the preferred way to capture images, but while it’s a discipline we’d all like to master, sometimes it doesn’t work out. It may be that you dialled in the wrong settings or it could be that tricky lighting conditions fooled your camera’s metering system and you didn’t have time to adjust – nevertheless, it’s better to capture the moment and correct the exposure afterwards than to miss the picture altogether. Of course, overexposure isn’t always a mistake – by exposing your images to the right and pulling them back during processing, you'll retain far more detail than a standard ‘good’ exposure out of the camera – providing you haven’t clipped your highlights.
