EVERY IMAGE NEEDS sharpening – even JPEGs that have already been sharpened in-camera – but how do you do it and, more importantly, what’s the best way to approach it? There are many, many ways, which is why it’s probably the most complex and avoided part of post-production, as it’s easier to get wrong than it is right. You have to think of your type of image: what level of sharpening has already been applied in-camera? Do some areas need sharpening more than others? And what’s your output going to be? You don’t need to sharpen half as much for a low-res web file as you will for a high-resolution print.
