Making manual selections

Smart selection tools are quick and convenient, but when control is paramount, manual selections are usually the best solution

WHILE SMART TOOLS like the Quick Selection Tool, or Elements’ Smart Brush, can select areas of colour and strong contrast, what happens when you need to select something that isn’t a distinctive colour or is an awkward shape? That’s where manual selection tools come into play. They take more time to use as you’ll be tracing the area that you wish to select, but it’s a good way to make an accurate selection. For instance, we want to create a dramatic, high-contrast, desaturated final image of this scene. However, as some areas are already high contrast, we only want to boost contrast on specific areas, such as the boardwalk and sky.
