Ottawa believes good goaltending and a tight-knit group will be key to success. And that – not her ability to sing – is why Maschmeyer was targeted as a free agent

YOU’VE HEARD THE STORIES – goaltenders are a notoriously quirky bunch. But Brianne Jenner has known Emerance Maschmeyer for nearly a decade and says that the starting stopper for the PWHL’s new Ottawa franchise is the exception to the rule. “Most goalies are weird, and she’s so normal,” said Jenner with a smile. “She’s like a normal teammate.” Since 2015, Jenner and Maschmeyer have worn the maple leaf together on Canada’s national team through seven world championships and an Olympics. The spoils from their efforts: three gold medals, four silvers and a bronze. The MVP in Beijing in 2022, Jenner was serving as captain of the Calgary Inferno when Maschmeyer made her CWHL debut after graduating from Harvard.
