Injuries to several key Caps played a big part in Washington’s tough 2022-23. But Wilson, among others, is healthy again and looking to put the team back on course

LAST SEASON, THE Washington Capitals missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Not coincidentally, power forward Tom Wilson played only 33 games, the fewest in a season in his NHL career. Fellow stalwarts Nicklas Backstrom and John Carlson both also played less than half the schedule. “The injuries had a big impact on our team,” said Caps GM Brian MacLellan. “Even when guys came back, they weren’t fully healthy. So, we struggled with that all year.” Wilson, who dealt with several lower-body injuries last season, is expecting his team to get back into the hunt this time around. “We’ve built something in Washington where we hold ourselves to a high standard, a winning mentality, a winning culture,” Wilson said. “And that hasn’t changed.
