In early November, the NCAA was set to vote on the issue of eligibility for major-junior players, who currently aren’t allowed to play U.S. college hockey because they’re considered “professionals” due to the stipends they receive from their CHL teams.
Lawsuits, which have transformed NCAA sports in recent years and have been driven by those with a vested interest in the big-money sports of football and basketball, are a factor here. But there’s also the recognition that with NCAA athletes now allowed to make money off their names, images and likenesses (NILs), it seems silly to bar a player from participating just because they previously got gas money to play…
