After taking a year off from hockey to pursue her medical degree, top-flight defender Claire Thompson returns to the ice with Minnesota

WHILE THE PWHL FILLED arenas in its inaugural season, Claire Thompson could only watch. The 26-year-old is one of the best defenders in the world, but she spent most of the year in hospitals – not with an ailment or healing from an injury, but rather on a year-long hiatus from the game while working to complete her medical degree. When the PWHL announced its launch, Thompson had already started a year-long clinical placement through New York University. It left the world champion and Olympic gold medallist with Team Canada out of the game. Fast-forward a year, and Thompson is set to trade in her stethoscope for a hockey stick, this time putting her medical studies on hold to return to the ice in the PWHL.
