North Dakota alums Sanderson, Pinto, Bernard-Docker and Kleven bring a special bond to the Senators

IT’S UNUSUAL IF AN NHL roster features two players from the same NCAA program. Three? That’s very peculiar. But four? All of whom played together? That’s verging on bizarre. But that’s the situation in Ottawa this season, where the Senators are home to four players from the North Dakota Fighting Hawks. Joining center Shane Pinto are defensemen Jake Sanderson, Jacob Bernard-Docker and Tyler Kleven. “The fact that four of us are on the same team in the NHL is pretty rare, especially from the same college team,” Pinto said. Sanderson and Bernard-Docker were first-round picks, while Pinto and Kleven were selected in Round 2, so expectations are high with the hope all four will be part of a future contending core.
