‘It was great to have free food.’ Calgary native Andrew Basha won’t get a gratis lunch with the Flames, but that’s all right – his family’s restaurant is just a slapshot away

HEADING INTO THE NHL draft in Las Vegas in June, Calgary GM Craig Conroy was determined to add more high-end skill to the Flames’ prospect pool. That mandate extended beyond his two first-round selections. Early on Day 2, with the 41st overall pick, Conroy was happy to get Calgary native Andrew Basha, an 85-point left winger with the WHL’s Medicine Hat Tigers last season. “The one thing, watching him this year, is speed,” Conroy said. “And his skill. He kind of has it all. To get him where we did, we were excited.
