HEADING TO SCOTIABANK ARENA on a crisp, mid-November evening in Toronto, I concocted an ultimatum for the visiting team I was about to see battle the host Maple Leafs. It was the Ottawa Senators, a group we’ve been watching for a few seasons now as one with playoff potential thanks to a maturing group of high-end youngsters. So far, we’ve not been rewarded – and this feels like a crucial campaign for that core. My theory was that this game would be a yardstick for the Senators. Auston Matthews was out of the lineup for the Leafs, so Toronto was not at full capacity.
