THE HURRICANES ARE one of the best teams in the NHL, and a big reason why is the draft. Not only have they made some great picks, but GM Don Waddell always makes sure the team has a bunch of selections to play with. To wit, this year, the Canes are slated to pick nine times in seven rounds, even though they’re a Stanley Cup contender. They’ll lose their fifth-rounder to Pittsburgh if they win the Cup (a condition of the Jake Guentzel trade), but that’s a good problem to have.
