Awrey spent a career accumulating plusses – it makes sense he’s still doing that in his twilight days in Florida

UP IN THE PRESS box at every home game of the ECHL’s Florida Everblades, Don Awrey consistently does his job as a volunteer off-ice official. When a goal is scored, he marks who is on the ice at the time, and his work shows up in the game sheet in the plus-minus column. Meanwhile, he chats up the other volunteer officials, which include his wife, Marie. Boston Bruins fans of a certain vintage remember Awrey as a defenseman who played 10 of his 16 NHL seasons in Beantown. He was known for his aggressive play – earning the nickname ‘Elbows’ – and backing up Bobby Orr.
