He may be soft-spoken, but Jonathan Lekkerimaki made a huge statement on the ice by earning MVP honors at the world juniors

COMING INTO THE 2024 world juniors, the spotlight could not have been more searing on Sweden’s top guns. The trio of Jonathan Lekkerimaki (VAN), Noah Ostlund (BUF) and Liam Ohgren (MIN) were all returnees and NHL first-round draft picks, but they needed to step up from their performances the previous year in Halifax. In that tournament, the high-end trio combined for just 10 points in seven games, and the Swedes finished short of a medal, losing to Team USA in the bronze game. And, of course, there was the little matter of Sweden failing to earn a gold medal in the world juniors since 2012 – a bewildering futility streak for a nation that has produced so many global talents.
