ONE DAY IN THE summer of 1994, the phone rang at Jody Shelley’s family home in Yarmouth, N.S. Shelley was 18, and his long-term goal was to continue both his schooling and his hockey-playing career in the university ranks. In the short term, he was headed to the beach that day. “Donnie Matheson (the late Boston Bruins and Halifax Mooseheads scout) called to tell me about this new team called the Halifax Mooseheads,” Shelley said. That call was one of several made three decades ago that launched a series of events that would change the hockey landscape forever.
