‘WOMEN’S HOCKEY WORKS’

There’s no question the PWHL has a few things to figure out – like team names and logos and merchandising and venues – but the early runaway success of the new unified women’s league cannot be denied

GOOD THINGS COME TO those who wait. For professional women’s hockey players, it appears the wait, one that spanned decades and multiple leagues, is over after the launch of the Professional Women’s Hockey League. The circuit set ambitious goals with exactly six months from announcement to puck drop, a span that included choosing markets, securing arenas, scheduling, holding a draft, building rosters, hiring staff, making rules, securing broadcasting, finding sponsors and developing merchandise and branding. With the inaugural season underway, some of these items remain in the works.
