As the March 7 trade deadline rapidly approaches, a great deal of the intrigue surrounds top talents who could use a change of scenery for more than ‘just hockey’ reasons

IT’S PERHAPS BEST LEFT buried in the sands of time, but it’s difficult as the trade deadline approaches not to think back to one of the NHL’s most maligned marketing efforts. The advert in question – part of a larger and wholly incomprehensible campaign that dropped with a thud in advance of the 2019-20 season – featured a telenovela-esque seaside embrace under the caption “No Soap Operas” beside a photo of an in-action Auston Matthews, the latter image splashed with the NHL shield and the words “Just Hockey.” As best as one could glean a coherent message, it was that there was no place for foofaraw and fluff in the NHL.
