EVER SINCE 2016, when the passing of Philadelphia Flyers founder and co-owner Ed Snider signalled the end of an era of close rapport between the club and its fans, the team had been struggling to create a new identity. There had been an ambitious multi-million-dollar renovation of the Wells Fargo Center – which opened in 1996 – and a PR initiative by Comcast Corporation, the cable-television giant that assumed total ownership of the team following Snider’s death.
But the Flyers’ struggles on the ice (three straight seasons out of the playoffs – the second-worst drought in franchise history), combined with dwindling attendance figures from their always-loyal following in the Delaware Valley, indicated even more was going to be needed.
So, after some major changes in the team’s front office and a pivot…
