Jake Richard’s upbringing in hockey was unconventional, but it’s one he loved nonetheless – and it’s certainly paying off for the Sabres prospect

JAKE RICHARD WAS BORN into hockey. That’s a statement only his generation of Florida-born hockey players could even dream of making, but for the 19-year-old Jacksonville product, it’s true. Richard was born in August 2004, the same summer his dad became the president of the Southern Professional League’s Jacksonville Barracudas. While many kids in the Sunshine State stick to the hot sand and breaking waves, Richard always felt more at home in the cold of Jacksonville ice rinks. It was a gift he inherited from his father, Gilles, who played semi-pro in Jacksonville before Richard was born.
