Spooner is finally back where it all began. And while she’s grateful for the personal opportunity, she’s even happier for the next generation of stars

IT HAS BEEN MORE than a decade since Natalie Spooner first suited up for her hometown team, the CWHL Toronto Furies. In 2012, Spooner was 22 and thrilled for the opportunity. She had already won one gold and one silver medal with Team Canada at the worlds and was a top-10 finalist for the NCAA’s Patty Kazmaier Award during her senior year at Ohio State. “I’d seen people like Tessa Bonhomme be drafted by Toronto,” she said. “Players that I looked up to. When I was drafted by Toronto, I was so excited. I was still living at home at that point, so I was just like, ‘OK, sweet. I get to keep playing.’” Driving the Toronto offense for 115 games across six seasons, Spooner produced more than a point per game.…
