WHEN HE WAS NAMED the CHL’s scholastic player of the year for 2021-22, Owen Beck played hockey full-time while also scraping by in his final year of high school with a 94 percent average, balancing a course load that included calculus and data management, advanced functions, world religions, kinesiology, chemistry and English. But it was advanced functions that really floated his boat. “When you’re solving a difficult problem and you come up with the right answer,” Beck said, “that’s so fun and satisfying.”
