With the new season comes many new beginnings, with fresh faces on and (contrary to popular belief) off the ice. A remarkable rookie class promises to make the Calder competition an all-time race, while several sublimely skilled vets look to equal all-time greats. A unified women’s hockey league brings all of the world’s top talent under the same banner, while a couple of Eastern Conference powerhouses look to hang some banners of their own. And, yes, at long last, the flat-cap era (hopefully) will come to an end

JUST THINK, THERE’S ONLY one more season more worth of sleeps until the salary cap finally spikes again. Or at least that’s the expectation. If all goes according to plan, the 2023-24 season will be the last one in which the NHL essentially has a flat cap. With league revenues soaring, the players are close to paying back their debt from the truncated pandemic seasons, fuelling speculation the ceiling will go up as much as $12 million in the next three seasons. In fact, when hockey related revenues from the past couple of seasons are totalled up, the balance might actually be paid in full before the Vegas Golden Knights kick off the season by raising their Stanley Cup banner at their Oct. 10 home-opener.
