THE HOCKEY NEWS CAN sometimes act as a time capsule. Take the cover of the Feb. 7, 1986, issue, which featured two burgeoning NHL stars who appeared to be heading in opposite directions. In New York, 22-year-old Rangers goalie John Vanbiesbrouck was playing his way to a Vezina Trophy and seemingly asserting himself as a future Hall of Fame netminder, while the Detroit Red Wings were wringing their hands, concerned that 20-year-old Steve Yzerman had plateaued early. Their paths did, however, diverge. While Vanbiesbrouck remained a top stopper and lived on the periphery of the Vezina conversation for the next dozen seasons, the 1985-86 campaign was arguably the pinnacle of his career.
