BEFORE THE ‘MIRACLE on Ice,’ the Americans had previous glory at the Olympics thanks to the 1960 team that won gold in California. That team, too, was an underdog – Team Canada, repped by the Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen, who settled for silver, was the favorite this time – but the U.S. got the job done under a legendary coach. While 1980 had Herb Brooks, 1960 countered with Jack Riley, who coached NCAA Army for 36 years, from 1950 to 1986. In a nice bit of legacy, his son Brian Riley is the current coach at Army and has been behind the bench for the Black Knights almost every year since 1989. Goaltending was also big in both tournaments. Everyone knows about Jim Craig’s heroics in Lake Placid, but Jack McCartan was huge…
