THE HOCKEY NEWS MADE it clear it was time to break from tradition when it met news of expansion from the Original Six by declaring the move long overdue for the NHL. The league was still grappling with issues such as scheduling, playoff format and competitive balance. We can sympathize with the plight of Quebec City hockey fans who have spent nearly three decades waiting for the NHL’s return, but imagine, if you will, the mood of Vancouverites when they found out NHL expansion would go forward without their fair city. Vancouver was not among the six teams named as part of the 1967 NHL expansion, which is especially hard to fathom given a franchise was awarded to St. Louis with “hopes a suitable group” would apply for ownership.
