ONE OF THE BIGGEST storylines in the 1970s was the rivalry between the NHL and the upstart WHA, which paid top dollar to several stars and caused the NHL to retaliate by expanding into some of the WHA’s desired markets. So when the two sides agreed to get pro hockey back down to one major North American league, it made headlines. The process had its ups and downs, as detailed in this cover story from the summer of 1977. The most interesting note is that, in this article, it’s stated that six WHA teams were to come over to the NHL, not just the four that ended up joining.
