BOBBY HULL reportedly once joked in the time after his selection by the Winnipeg Jets in the WHA’s general draft that it would take a million dollars to persuade him to change leagues – thus, the outlaw league’s teams pooled together the cash to make Hull’s appearance on this cover possible. The photo of Hull smiling alongside then-wife Joanne with a novelty-sized $1-million cheque in hand was taken in St. Paul, Minn., not Winnipeg, as he signed his Jets deal in two countries. The million-dollar bonus was inked in the U.S. due to favorable tax laws, and Hull signed his 10-year contract with the Jets, worth $1.75 million, north of the border.
