WHEN BRUINS GM LYNN Patrick left for the 1958 World Championship in Norway, his hope was that he’d return to Boston with an update on defenseman Lars Bjorn. By the time Patrick was headed back stateside, however, his sights were set on a much bigger project: persuading Soviet Union officials to allow their players to try out for NHL jobs. In particular, Patrick was captivated by Veniamin Alexandrov, who had a starring role and scored nine goals and 12 points in seven games for the silver medal-winning Soviet squad. Alexandrov almost made Patrick forget about Bjorn entirely and led to a moment of prescience. Speaking of Alexandrov and the best players at the worlds, Patrick boasted about the 20-year-old Russian forward’s talents before warning not to “underestimate those Russian hockey players.”…
