THOUGH ‘THE TRADE’ itself shocked most in the hockey world, it happened that THN’s Toronto office was chasing down the rumor before it became headline news. As the story goes, a tipster had called the office in late July with “the most incredible rumor – that Wayne Gretzky and another unspecified Oiler would be traded to the L.A. Kings in exchange for Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, three first-round picks…and $20 million.” Turned out it was slightly off. It was actually $15 million in cash, and Mike Krushelnyski and Marty McSorley were the anonymous Oilers.
