HEY, IF YOU CANCEL an entire NHL season – and lose out on $2.1 billion in league revenues in the process – you’re going to be called idiots. And that’s what happened on this cover after NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced the cancellation of the 2004-05 season on Feb. 16, 2005. After months of negotiations between the NHL, led by Bettman and team owners, and the NHLPA, led by executive director Bob Goodenow, went nowhere, fans were shocked and outraged when the news broke that the NHL would become the first major North American pro sports league to cancel a whole season due to a labor dispute.
