THE SUSPENSION OF Maurice ‘Rocket’ Richard in 1955 wasn’t just a huge hockey story; it had tremendous ramifications on Canadian history itself, as it became a rallying point for French-Canadians in the province who had felt demeaned by the Anglo-Canadian power structure at the time. Scholars even believe Richard had a significant impact on Quebec’s ‘Quiet Revolution’ several years later. As for the spark itself, it came when Richard was suspended the remainder of the regular season and playoffs by NHL president Clarence Campbell after the Rocket knocked linesman Cliff Thompson unconscious with punches when Thompson had attempted to restrain Richard from attacking Boston’s Hal Laycoe (who had high-sticked Richard, gashing him for stitches).
