THE GREAT ONE HAD the cover all to himself in the Feb. 3, 1984, edition. It was the only real choice – given it was the Special All-Star Issue and Wayne Gretzky, then in his fifth NHL season, took 30 of 30 first-place votes for the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association’s Campbell Conference team. Gretzky was at the center of virtually every hockey story of consequence that year – from an epic 51-game point streak to calling New Jersey a “Mickey Mouse organization” to a CTV interview he had given where he admitted a trade to an American team wasn’t as farfetched as it sounded. (That one would take a few years.) It’s unlikely any hockey fan needs an explanation for the reasoning behind illustrator Ted Michener depicting Gretzky as hockey’s version…
