ILLUSTRATIONS BY LEE Kavetski were a big part of The Hockey News’ early history, bringing a playful tone to many a cover. This cartoon plays off the unique and sometimes confounding relationship that players in the sport have with each other: you leave it all on the ice, no matter how bruising things may have been during the game. It’s also a reminder that fistfights in the modern game pale in comparison to the literal stick-swinging battles that happened back in the day (especially since the players didn’t wear helmets). But the main story involved Charlie Conacher, the Maple Leafs legend and future Hall of Famer, taking over coaching duties in Chicago. Conacher was part of the fabled ‘Kid Line’ in Toronto with Joe Primeau and Busher Jackson in the 1930s.…
