FOR THE FIRST DECADE after the 2004-05 lockout, Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin re-energized the NHL. And while those two were set for Stanley Cup success, a new dynamic duo was climbing the ranks by 2016: Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers and Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs. So for our annual Money and Power Issue, we gave the youngsters the super-hero treatment, with a great illustration by Kagan McLeod representing the tectonic shift we awaited as their NHL careers bloomed. On our Top 100 People Of Power and Influence list, McDavid earned the top spot, with Matthews right behind him at No. 2. And it wasn’t just because they were electric on-ice talents; it was because of the rabid Canadian markets they played in and the endorsements and spotlights…
