THE NEW YORK RANGERS were untouchable in 1993-94. They were the only team with 50 wins, had a league-best 112 points and made a thrilling playoff run that culminated with back-to-back Game 7 wins en route to the franchise’s first Stanley Cup in 54 years. Thus, Mark Messier, New York’s captain and author of ‘The Guarantee,’ had plenty to smile about. But despite their place among the favorites entering the new season, the star-studded Rangers narrowly snuck into the 1994-95 playoffs before a second-round ouster. It was the beginning of the end of the Rangers’ run on top.
