BEYOND WHAT HAPPENS on the ice, fandom is often built on debates of superiority, and in 1986 – with 25-year-old Wayne Gretzky the reigning Hart Trophy winner and 21-year-old Mario Lemieux fresh off of winning his first Lester Pearson Award as the player-voted MVP – there was no argument vein as rich for mining as that of No. 99 versus No. 66. The feature, penned by Bob McKenzie, weighs the two greats on a variety of merits, including supporting casts, consistency, international performance and head-to-head matchups. Even earnings and endorsements are discussed. The conclusion, though, is both diplomatic and one to which many have arrived over the years: in a battle between two preternatural talents who could singlehandedly carry franchises to greatness, it’s all a matter of personal preference.
