THOUGH MODERN NHL broadcasts often see the league tinkering with camera angles, experimenting with formats and trying to keep up with the latest and greatest in television production, the league once believed TV posed a threat to the game’s livelihood; then-NHL president Clarence Campbell worried game broadcasts would drive fans from the rink. Beyond attendance concerns, Campbell was also disquieted by the version of the sport being promoted on TV. He felt there was a glorification of the game’s violent elements, telling THN, “Fights, injuries, boarding and other rough tactics are the easiest to catch on television. On the other hand, the fast end-to-end rushes, the skillful, attractive features of the game, are most difficult to portray at home because of TV’s limited field of view.” Sure, the 10-inch, black-and-white sets of…
