SHOUT-OUT TO THE THN art department for this illustrative cover, depicting the ‘Woe, Canada’ of it all back in the summer of 2014. Only one Canadian team – the Montreal Canadiens – had made the playoffs that spring, but we tried to help out the other six northern squads with columns on how to fix what ailed them. In Vancouver, for example, the Canucks could defend, but they couldn’t score. A retool was in order. Center Ryan Kesler was a great trade chip, but getting a prime pivot in return would be difficult. In the end, the Canucks sent Kesler to Anaheim for Nick Bonino, Luca Sbisa, a first-rounder and a third-rounder.
