WHEN DIGGING INTO whether playoff overtime was devolving into a state of abject lawlessness, The Hockey News’ findings were stunning enough to earn front-page coverage alongside Dave Elston’s biting and brilliant illustration. As the front-page copy reads, it had been three seasons since the last penalty was called in an extra frame of post-season action. That was April 7, 1984 – St. Louis’ Rob Ramage was the guilty party, whistled for holding in the second OT of Game 3 in the best-of-five tilt between the Blues and Red Wings. The story inside explained that the equivalent of nearly six games had passed since Ramage was sent to the box, and his was only one of eight “legitimate” infractions in the previous decade of overtime post-season play.
