JUST AS MODERN FILM animation doesn’t hold a candle to old-school practical effects, the fact that photographer Bruce Bennett had an armor-suited extra for this shoot with soon-to-be NHL ironman Doug Jarvis only serves to elevate this cover. This issue commemorating Jarvis’ achievement hit shelves exactly one week before the Hartford Whalers center set the record for consecutive games played. He reached the milestone on Dec. 26, 1986, against Montreal, Jarvis’ first NHL club and with whom he played his first 560 games. Jarvis’ run came to a sudden halt the next season. After starting the year in Hartford and playing two contests, increasing his ironman streak to 964 games, the Whalers demoted Jarvis, 32, to the minors.
