ZEROED IN IN GOAL

TERRY SAWCHUK WAS six when George Hainsworth recorded his 94th and final NHL shutout. But a season before Sawchuk left Detroit for Toronto, the legendary Wings goalie set the new all-time mark for shutouts, turning aside all 36 shots in a Jan. 18, 1964, meeting with the Montreal Canadiens. Sawchuk’s record stood for more than 45 years before Martin Brodeur bested it. And, as the story explains, it was nice Sawchuk got the spotlight this time – he was something of an afterthought upon tying Hainsworth’s record, as it came the same night Gordie Howe eclipsed the NHL’s all-time goal-scoring record in a Nov. 10, 1963, showdown with the Canadiens.
