FIGHTING – AND THE potential death of it – has been a THN cover staple for decades. But in this issue, which was produced during the 2004-05 lockout, we looked more into the spirit of things and how NHLers police themselves through an “unwritten code.” Penned by senior writer Mark Brender, the list is at times informative and at times funny (“Do not hit Mario Lemieux unless your name is Darius Kasparaitis. Do not hit Mark Messier, especially if your name is Martin Strbak.”). In terms of fighting, the rules included “tough guys must never challenge non-tough guys to fights,” but, that said, non-tough guys should keep their mouths shut and their sticks down if they want the tough guys to abide by the previous rule.
