AIR…UDVARI? This photo by Jack Quinn, then shooting for the once-ubiquitous United Press, of referee Frank Udvari seemingly levitating along the boards as New York Rangers great Andy Bathgate dashes by catches the eye and begs you to pick up the issue. Funny thing is, this arguably isn’t the most iconic photo of Udvari clinging to the boards; that distinction goes to the photo of the Hall of Fame ref holding on to the cage for dear life as Gordie Howe delivers a hit on Gordie Hannigan. Then again, maybe that’s not surprising given Udvari had something of a Forrest Gump-esque quality for being present for remarkable moments.
