ON THE LIGHTER SIDE, fans of the 1960s Habs will be happy to know that “headless goalie” Gump Worsley kept his noggin intact while with the Rangers in ’54-55. He’d later backstop Montreal to four Cups in five years from 1965 to 1969. (He got scored on in this photo, though.) The main story dealt with the upstart 1954-55 Toronto Maple Leafs, whose November surge, including consecutive 1-0 shutouts of Detroit, vaulted them past the defending champion Red Wings for second place. At the time, Detroit had finished atop the league standings six straight seasons, but an injury to Gordie Howe had THN speculating the Leafs could become successors to Detroit’s throne. In Howe’s absence, however, Ted Lindsay helped paper over the cracks. Then 29, Lindsay scored the winning goals in Detroit’s…
