PROVING THAT WE ARE nothing if not cinephiles at The Hockey News, the headline for this issue came from the 1999 Brad Pitt/Edward Norton movie Fight Club. But we got theatrical in a different way, pitting two pro-fighting staffers against two anti-violence staffers in a fake email thread run by editor in chief Jason Kay. The result? A lively debate as to whether all the fights, cheap shots and chaos in that year’s playoff bracket were good for the sport or not. And whether we meant to be prescient or not, it’s worth noting that cover boy Drew Doughty and his burly Los Angeles Kings went on to win the Stanley Cup in 2012.
