BATTLE SCARS
IT IS ONE OF the most iconic photos in hockey history. In it, we see Boston Bruins goalie ‘Sugar’ Jim Henry, with two black eyes and a broken nose (this was the pre-mask era, after all), shaking hands with bloodied Montreal Canadiens superstar Maurice ‘Rocket’ Richard just minutes after Richard had helped dispatch the Bruins in the 1952 semifinal. The way Henry leans toward Richard for the hand shake makes it appear as though he’s bowing in deference to the 30-year-old great. The Habs were then swept in the final by Detroit. Elsewhere in the issue, THN fans voted on their all-stars: Terry Sawchuk, Red Kelly, Doug Harvey, Elmer Lach, Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay, with Montreal’s Dick Irvin as coach.
